About UFTA
A neutral home for the people who feed a neighborhood.
The United Food Trade Association exists for one reason: to help the independent food economy be discovered, booked, and treated fairly — on the merit of the work, not the cost of a location. We don't think we get to decide what that looks like alone.
Why we exist
Too often, who gets found is decided by who can afford the rent on a storefront — not by who can cook, host, or serve. We think that's backwards. Quality, reliability, and trust should be what gets rewarded, independent of any single app, platform, or location advantage.
UFTA inverts the gatekeeping. We're not an app competing for the customer's attention. We're the neutral backbone underneath the apps — the shared standards and the trust system that let an operator earn their reputation once and carry it everywhere.
How we're actually built
We didn't write a charter first and go looking for members second. We started with conversations — at commissaries, at truck meets, over the phone — and let what we heard shape what got built. That's still how it works:
- Quick surveys — short, recurring, and published back, not filed away.
- A public board — every request visible, tagged with where it actually stands. See the board →
- Direct outreach — we're calling and showing up, metro by metro, looking for the people this hasn't reached yet.
What we believe
We're here for the pin. Every pin on the map is a family making food that stirs a neighborhood — never a marker, never a row in a table, never a number. The scaffolding serves the pin; the pin never serves the scaffolding. That sentence is the test we hold every decision against.
What that backbone is made of
- Open standards — published, versioned, and applied consistently. No favorites among apps, vendors, or providers.
- A trust ladder, U0–U4 — trust that is earned, explainable, and revocable, driven by evidence rather than relationship. See the tiers →
- A human edge — Location Hosts who steward a place on the ground, the locality a remote system structurally can't manufacture. How hosting works →
- Protection for vendors — a private, evidence-backed way to report misconduct and recognize good stewards. Read the protection standard →
Neutral by charter
Neutrality isn't a posture for us — it's written into how we govern. Requirements are published, trust tiers and eligibility rules are documented and auditable, and we don't tilt the field toward any partner. If we ever broke that promise, we'd stop being worth trusting. Read the Charter →
Where this started
Every association starts somewhere small. Ours started with a notebook and a few dozen conversations, one metro at a time — built from day one to work wherever people are cooking out of a window, not just where it started.
